How did it all begin?

When I had my first baby, I received eight well-meant bouquets of flowers. Not only did I not have enough vases, but I’d also just had a baby so I was already trying to look after this tiny bundle of joy without adding flowers into the mix. Between feeding, washing, dressing, cooking, trying to grab 5 minutes of sleep I did not have time to take care of flowers, I didn’t even have enough time to look after myself.

I would regularly get to 5pm and realise I hadn’t cleaned my teeth yet! I was also really overwhelmed and felt like I had no idea what I was doing. What I really wanted during that time was five minutes to drink a hot cup of tea, or do something to soothe my weary body, and some reassurance it would all be okay.

And that’s how Don’t Buy Her Flowers was born.

What sets your business apart?

Thoughtfulness. Our customers can put together a bespoke gift that is perfectly suited to the person and occasion you are sending it for. Our gifts are aimed at encouraging the recipient to take a bit of time for themselves, and as a result the recipients are often emotional – someone has really thought about them.

What is the concept behind your business or the problem you’re solving?

Life is busy. Many of us are in The Rush Hour - juggling families, work, aging, trying to still have a life. Our loved ones aren’t living around the corner anymore. Our increased understanding of mental health means we want to support others. And we still want to connect - it is human nature to connect, to empathise, to celebrate, and to acknowledge when someone is going through something difficult.

Our gifts encourage the recipient to take a moment for themselves - with a good book and a cuppa, a luxurious bath and a glass of wine, cosy socks and a crossword. Customers handpick from across categories including beauty, food, drinks, accessories, books and magazines. Their selection is gift wrapped and their message is handwritten and often invokes tears. By sending a Don’t Buy Her Flowers gift, the sender is saying ‘I recognise that you deserve some TLC and I care’, whether that’s for a birthday, a diagnosis, a break-up or a new job.

What is your brand vision?

To grow Don’t Buy Her Flowers – with a focus on growing Corporate Gifting (which is notoriously rubbish and lacking in thoughtfulness).
