How did it all begin?

After many years and many Buying & Executive roles, I was given an opportunity to head up all of Beauty and Fashion Concessions, which I adored. Whilst overseeing the Beauty sector I discovered COPRA, the Cosmetics and Perfumery Retailers Association, which really changed my focus, path, and extended my knowledge and reach to a much wider audience within the whole beauty industry. I later became the COPRA Chairman, which I have to say was one of the biggest highlights of my career. My passion for the industry and COPRA and everything it stood for, drove me to bigger and better things. Today I am proud to be a consultant to this amazing association.

What do you feel passionate about/what drives you?

My family! I have always wanted to lead by example, be kind and understanding and treat people as you would want to be treated. I also love retail! I’m a buyer at heart, always looking for great products and brands and of course, always looking for a good deal!

Share an example of early life that has shaped you?

As well as being loved and cared for unconditionally, I was also taught from a very young age to value and respect everything and everybody.

Highlights of your business journey so far?

At the start of my work life I wanted to be a police officer, but at that time, unfortunately I was too short! I didn’t really have a plan B and then retail sort of fell into my lap. I have to say, I loved every minute of being in retail and felt I’d found my calling. At 19, I started buying Childrenswear and Nursery products for a large department store, which was really the start of my retail buying journey.

Key lessons you have learned along the way?

Always be true to yourself! Do not try and be something other people want you to be or to hear. Be honest, respectful, caring and above all be passionate about anything you undertake.

Best piece of advice you have received?

Always try, and keep trying and if you’re not sure, then ask!

Advice to an aspiring entrepreneur or woman just starting her career?

Be heard! Get involved! Ask questions and learn along the way. Keep pushing and be happy!

What funding route have you chosen for your business and why?

Self-Funded.

Some of the challenges you have faced and how you overcame them?

After being made redundant, I was left with a huge gaping hole inside of me, which was a huge challenge to overcome mentally. I felt very let down, as I had put my heart and soul into a job I loved and now I wasn’t needed. Looking back this was the push I needed and it put me on the track to starting my own business, but of course then the new challenges! The initial challenge was preparing the infrastructure for a business that was new to me, in terms of how it worked and how much to charge. I also needed to work out what was expected of me and my business. Really all the basic stuff, but this was one of the most important parts of building my business. It is important to create a solid platform, one that allows you and your business to develop and grow.

Why is it important to support women-led business?

For me, it’s about connecting to likeminded people, great leaders and the great minds of determined, passionate people. I don’t like to play the ‘I’m a woman’ card. I am a woman, but I don’t require any special treatment, just a fair, equal chance.
