Màzo Candles London stands for a brand you can trust to take care of your planet so you can take care of your space.

Take this moment, it’s all for you.

How did it all begin?

We were going through an incredibly difficult time and we were seeking something pure and positive. The original idea was a ‘fun thing to do’ which quickly became something more. After researching, we discovered more about the effects of paraffin wax on health and the planet, development then really began. As we were researching the market, we kept asking ourselves ‘why isn’t there a candle that looks like this or that has natural ingredients’. We decided to stop asking and create it ourselves.

We sadly lost our wonderful Dad in 2021. Our world was shaken. We knew how proud our Dad was of us and Màzo. We were ready to launch in November 2022 when our amazing Mum took ill and passed away. We were absolutely broken. We needed time to take it all in and to get our heads around it all, which we are still working on.

Knowing our parents were watching over us and inspiring every step we were taking, we kept our promise and launched to market in 2023.

What sets your business apart?

We’ve been together and at the centre of every element of Màzo’s creation. The wax blend was tried and tested until the hot and cold scent was at it’s optimum. The essential oils were carefully layered until we could close our eyes and feel the moment of calm we were looking to recreate. It is this part of the scent design which fascinated us the most. We knew we were in a truly unique position where we have the same memory to tap into and the same feeling that memory evoked but received the scents differently. This is how scent plays such a significant role.

What is the concept behind your business or the problem you’re solving?

There are a lot of scented candles out there, the market is flooded to be honest. So we decided to disrupt things by making a beautifully scented candle that is also a piece of interior. Our candles are something you want to display, lit or unlit and the scent throw is unmatched. Scent should never be overlooked when designing interiors.

What do you feel passionate about/what drives you?

We are very spiritual people and as sisters, we have seen each other through our highs and lows. There is a wonderful ‘Ted Lasso’ quote that summed it up for us. Be curious, not judgemental. That is exactly how we have learned to heal our past wounds. We don’t judge ourselves on them, we remember them with curiosity. We are passionate about asking questions that open a space and allows in the light. We’ll never stop learning, about our business, ourselves and everyone we meet.

Share an example of early life that has shaped you?

Growing up as 2 of 6 children, raised by 2 incredibly artistic and creative parents who believed we could do anything we wanted to do. Our Dad was a Cartoonist and Graphic Designer and our Mum was a Musician. Our parents always taught us to do every job with pride and belief whether we were working in a pub, waitressing, raising our children or working for ourselves. This was an example set to us by our parents. Having a strong work ethic meant we appreciated not only what we do but what others do as well.

Highlights of your business journey so far?

Without a doubt, our biggest highlight so far is when someone sees what we have created and shares our excitement and vision. When we show someone one of our products and they actually say ‘WOW’! To have worked so hard and personally at something and then hear that other people see that too is just something we will never take for granted. It’s so important to us to listen to what people think and learn from it, we’ll never stop learning.

Key lessons you have learned along the way?

We are the brand, not our products. Our story is important to engage with people. This was a hard pill to swallow as we were totally ok with hiding in the background and thinking that would be enough. As it turns out, we can’t share our passion and ambition with a candle itself unless you know why it’s there.

Best piece of advice you have received?

That first part or developing, creating, planning, starting out will feel like it will last forever…and ever! It won’t last forever though so keep your nerve and hold on, because when things start going, you need to be ready!

Advice to an aspiring entrepreneur or woman just starting her career?

Don’t get disheartened at the pace of year one, hold your nerve.

What funding route have you chosen for your business and why?

We are currently looking for investment to allow us to develop Màzo and take it to the next level.

Some of the challenges you have faced and how you overcame them?

We are still in the challenge phase… we’ll let you know in a year how we did!

Why is it important to support women-led business?

Guys have had the mic for far too long. There are a lot of incredible women out there who have abilities far beyond what they are given credit for. We don’t hate men, actually, we quite like them which is why we will always consider having them work for us.

My inspiration is...

(Zö) - My 4 children because every day they teach me something new but everyday I see them open to learning and I couldn’t be prouder.
(Maz) - I’m so proud of us creating Màzo. We’ve come so far and we are actually doing this and that will never stop being amazing to me.

My greatest fear is...

(Zö) - SPIDERS!
(Maz) - I’d have to say spiders as well! Thankfully my partner is fine with them (he actually likes them) so he’s always on hand to remove them…just needs to be quicker about it sometimes!

The most courageous thing I’ve ever done is...

(Zö) - Having a water birth with my first daughter and then doing it another 3 times which I figure basically makes me Wonder Woman!
(Maz) - Skydiving! It was something I had wanted to do for so long and I don’t know why as I’m not good with heights but I did it and loved it. Never again though!

Guilty pleasure?

(Zö) - Singing to Black Velvet at full volume to my children, 100% sure I sound identical to Alannah Myles!
(Maz) - Can’t beat a bit of Chesney Hawks - ‘The One and Only’. Music always helps us to tap into that creative side and just let go but sometimes you just need to release that energy a belt out a song!

Mantra you live by?

(Zö) - Our Mum always said ‘If you could, would you and if you would, should you?’
(Maz) - Be curious not judgemental.

Female role model?

(Zö) - Kate Bright of UMBRA International who do personal security. Kate works in what would be considered a ‘mans industry’ and she continues to smash down those walls and she does all with style.
(Maz) - Our Mum. She raised 6 kids who never felt they went without love or attention because we never did.

Women-led brand you love?

(Zö) - Little Bird by Jules Oliver. I love the retro feel, the simplicity and the brightness of the clothes she designs when so many other brands try to make you dress your children like little adults.
(Maz) - Happy Place by Fearne Cotton. With Podcasts, festivals and books as well as meditation practices, Fearne is always working to inspire and help people but is also so very honest about her life journey as well. She doesn’t pretend she has it all figured out so you can join her on the journey rather than watching her. She’s so inclusive and spiritual.

Top productivity tool?

(Zö) - Ted Talks are great. There is such a variety of subjects and to get to learn a little more and open your mind to another way of thinking is so powerful.
(Maz) - Podcasts! There are so many out there than can inspire you and help you by hearing other peoples stories.
