CEO and Founder

UMBRA International Group

I am a Chartered Security Professional with 25 years of frontline private client facing experience in the Private and Family Office sector as a Personal Assistant, Executive Assistant, Chief of Staff and Family Office Manager, moving on to becoming a Close Protection (CP) Operative, and finally a Secure Lifestyle Advisor as CEO and Founder of UMBRA International Group.

Share an experience or challenge that has shaped you? My best friend died when I was 11. She had a brain tumour - it was detected after she developed a headache while at school, and she then died 3 days later. A few years later I developed a serious kidney issue and had a major operation just before my A levels. In 2020 another schoolfriend died suddenly. All 3 events, and the subsequent work I’ve done to make sure I have processed them properly, have sharpened my view around the delicate nature of life & purpose, the importance of deep relationships, the value I have for my health, and living in the moment. Subconsciously I think it is why I have an obsession for raising money for charitable causes, to push forward the unknowns of medicine and science so we can save others and progress mankind.
Best piece of advice you have ever been given? Control what you can control, and that only. Hire better than you, and have a working knowledge of P&L and balance sheets to keep a regular eye on numbers, regardless of how big you grow.
What advice would you give to your younger self or a woman just starting her career? Stay humble and hungry. Humble when ‘success’ comes knocking, and hungry to develop, learn, understand and question. Listening to podcasts like High Performance has taken me out of my own head into other industries and business leaders mindsets and I learn from every conversation they have.
What does success mean to you? Being my own boss (with the good bad and ugly that comes with that responsibility for clients and team) able to be consistently creatively inspired by ideas and people, roll with the inevitable punches life throws and enjoy the journey is success itself. I measure my daily success via a quick and easy journaling methodology by Vex King that involves one thing I’m grateful for, one way I’ve looked after myself and one celebration - it reminds me that there is success in the everyday.
How do you handle challenges and changes? What's in your toolkit? I’m getting better at working out what challenges I need to prioritize and in what order. I don’t always get it right - but I try to get it more right than wrong and always prioritize taking the heavy hits myself rather than my team/family - it’s how I thrive. Prioritising my holistic health has been my best investment so I can process the way I like to work and live (to its fullest). As well as having an incredible network of superhumans to lean on - I’ve always said there’s a person to solve every problem, my goal is to know them all!

I’m actually in the process of doing a lot of cognitive / brain health work to continue to be able to embrace change and see it in a positive light, as someone who relishes challenges and loves the evolution of innovation.

My emotional security toolkit is being honed at all times and I’m regularly asked to share it - click here for the outline I created as a blog post.

Why is it important to support women in business and women-led business? Women represent 51% of the UK population at the last Census. The statistics about what women bring to the economy are eyewatering, as are the figures showing what they could bring to worldwide economies. We need to challenge stereotypes and support women and their default position in caring roles, as well as pushing for the right financial support needed to raise children being readily available. Female lead businesses perform better according to the Rose Review, and as Entrepreneurs are the engine room of any economy, we need to maximise the impact that women-led business can have on the world by ensuring that no woman faces barriers to setting up and growing businesses - as a priority.
