Sarah Paton
Partner
Irwin Mitchell LLP
I am a Partner at Irwin Mitchell LLP. I qualified as a private client lawyer over 10 years ago. My particular area of specialism is helping individuals and their families with the legal and tax aspects of managing, protecting and passing on personal wealth.
Share an experience or challenge that has shaped you? This isn’t just one experience. I love to travel and I think that seeing new places is incredibly educational. Exploring different cultures, meeting diverse people, and seeing the beauty of our planet has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the world in which we live.
Best piece of advice you have ever been given? Don’t fear failure—use it. Every mistake is a chance to grow, reflect, and refine your approach. Progress isn’t about perfection; it’s about learning and evolving.
What advice would you give to your younger self or a woman just starting her career? Trust your instincts and don’t wait for permission to take up space. Build a network early—mentors, peers, and allies will be your sounding board and your support system. Stay curious, keep learning, and don’t shy away from challenges - they are often where the biggest growth happens. Most importantly, remember: your voice matters in every room you enter.
What does success mean to you? Success for me is the sum of lots of smaller things—moments of kindness, connection, and growth. It's the feeling that I’ve made a difference to someone, even in a small way. That’s what gives meaning to what I do.
How do you handle challenges and changes? What's in your toolkit? I adapt to change by staying open-minded, reflective, and solution-focused. My toolkit includes self-awareness, clear communication, and a willingness to learn. I see change as an opportunity for growth and resilience.
Why is it important to support women in business and women-led business? Supporting women-led brands and businesses empowers innovation, equality, and economic growth. It helps amplify diverse voices, creates opportunities, and challenges outdated norms. When we back women entrepreneurs, we invest in a more inclusive and vibrant future.
60 Seconds with Sarah Paton
My inspiration is: The incredible people I get to work with every day. Their dedication, creativity, and passion drive me to be my best self.
My greatest fear is: Heights.
The most courageous thing I have ever done is: A hot air balloon ride in the Australian outback closely followed by a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. For someone terrified of heights, these two experiences were definitely tough!
I am most proud of: Making partner at Irwin Mitchell this year and watching my 2 children grow into these wonderful independent people.
Guiltless pleasure: Reading.
Mantra I live by: Be brave, stay curious and trust the journey.
Female role model: I am spoilt for choice with the fabulous ladies in this network, my mum, my sister and the strong successful women I work with at Irwin Mitchell.
Women-led brand I love: Studio 10, Stripe & Stare and Charlotte Tilbury.
